At some colleges, living on campus first year is a requirement, but for most others, it is a choice incoming freshman are faced with. Before I headed off to college, I heavily debated whether I should live on campus or not. Although it was highly encouraged to live on campus the first year, most of the people I knew were getting apartments off-campus.
I ultimately decided to live in the dorms on campus and it was a decision I am glad I made. By living on campus, you get a taste of independence while simultaneously being surrounded by a support system which makes the transition to college much easier. Here are some of the advantages of living on campus as opposed to living off-campus.
1. Everything is in a close proximity.
Most of what you could ever need is likely within walking distance from your dorm-classes: some sort of grocery store, restaurants, the bookstore, gym, library, and so on. This makes everything so much easier during times in which you don't have time to drive somewhere.
2. You don't have to frequently worry about parking.
Many who live off-campus are left with no other choice but to drive to their classes. Finding a parking spot can be a struggle at select times, especially when there is limited parking. This is stressful, frustrating, and can even make you late.
3. You meet tons of people.
Living on campus places with other freshmen, you're likely going to make friends and form relationships. There are so many opportunities to do this on campus as there are always people around in the library or dining halls, for example, to socialize with.
4. You are constantly surrounded with campus activities.
In most colleges, there is always something to do on campus or some sort of event happening. Participation in these types of activities are enjoyable, gives you a unique college experience, and allows you to explore your interests outside of the classroom.
5. There is a lot of free food involved.
Most RAs hold programs that really vary depending on the topic, but oftentimes there will be some sort of food involved. What's better than free food?
6. You will excel academically.
Research shows that those who live on campus during their freshman year of college perform better in school, earning a higher grade point average than those who do not. This is likely due to the support system and variety of resources on campus that you would get less exposure to if you were to live off-campus.
