If you're on the fence about how involved to get, or if you should at all, here are the benefits of being involved.
1. Meet New People
The number one reason why you should try to be involved on campus is to meet new people and potential new friends. It does not matter what organization or how many members, just as long as you enjoy and support what the club stands for. It can be difficult at a huge college, to make the campus smaller.
Outside of your roommates and people in your classes, it's hard to seek out new relationships. However, joining an organization that aligns with some of your interests can be fun and help to meet people that have things in common with you.
2. Have Commitments/Schedule
In college, you have plenty of free time. During this free time, it's easy to feel bored or unproductive. For this reason, it's important to set up a schedule and set up a plan to spend your day. When you are a part of an organization, you add a commitment to your schedule that becomes non-negotiable. This organization can help to fill your free time and make you feel better about how you spend your time.
3. Feel Productive
After you join your club and meet a few friends, you can't resist feeling a little proud of yourself. In college, everything is put into perspective and even the smallest accomplishment can feel like climbing Mt. Everest. Instead of spending your day with Netflix and staying in your room, you can step outside your comfort zone and be proud of yourself for putting yourself out there, even if it's in a small way. It's a step up from how you were spending your days the week before!
4. Spread the Word/Influence
After you spend time with your new organization, you can spread the word and start telling other people who seem to be struggling about your new-found interest. Some people might be finding it hard to find friends and because of this you should reach out and offer a helping hand. It will feel great, I promise. Not only did you make friends, you helped someone else widen their horizons as well.
