The Benefits Of Bilingualism

Why you should learn a second language.

The Benefits Of Bilingualism

There are a myriad of benefits to learning and becoming fluent in a second language, from better communication skills to heightened cultural experiences. Although this is not a comprehensive list, here are a few of the pros of working towards becoming bilingual.

Improved Brain Function

Studies have shown that speaking another language increases a person’s ability to solve problems, plan and perform other cognitive tasks. Bilingualism quite literally makes a person smarter; people who speak two languages tend to perform better in critical thinking and analysis than monolinguals. It is beneficial to a person’s intellect and brain function to speak a second language.

Deeper Art and Literary Experiences

There is an abundance of incredible foreign literature, including "Les Misérables" and Dante’s "Divine Comedy," that are written in another language. Certain nuances of the text are lost somewhere in translation, and full appreciation of such works can be attained through reading it in its original language. The same may be said for filmography; subtitles often don’t quite capture the meaning of what is said, and deep, meaningful dialogue might be better appreciated in its original format.

Travel

Speaking another language opens up a variety of travel opportunities; it is simply easier to navigate through a foreign country if one speaks the language. It is also much less stressful to completely immerse oneself in the culture and community of the country if communication is not an issue.

Communication

This point is painfully obvious, but very true. Speaking a second language allows a person to communicate with a wide variety of incredibly interesting people who might not speak English. This skill also opens up job opportunities, since it is a valuable trait to be able to interact with foreign clients or investors.

Cultural Understanding

Speaking a second language allows a person to delve deeper into a culture that is different from their own. I personally have learned a great deal about modern Italian life as well as Italian history while taking my language classes, and I thoroughly believe that it has enriched my worldview in an enormous way. Languages allow human beings from completely different areas of the globe to interact with one another and appreciate other viewpoints and experiences than their own. Language is an incredible, useful tool, and I would highly recommend that anyone looking to improve their understanding of the world to begin by learning to speak one.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
