What would I do without you?

Thank You To My Beloved College Roommates
Tessa Farthing

I am currently a college student, but at any point in your life that you have roommates, you have to appreciate their existence. I was lucky enough to get to choose five of my best friends to spend every day with for the rest of my college career. That can sound pretty terrifying. It really is when you think about it. If you sign a lease with these folks, you are committed to staying in your humble abode with them possibly for years to come. You have to depend on these individuals for so much, and you become ridiculously close with one another.

There aren't enough words in the English language to properly thank my roommates for how they have enriched my life and my college experience. When you live with others there is a sense of transparency among the household. There is no reason to put up a facade. Rather, you are able to embody your truest self. When you're having a stressful week, your roommates are the ones that get to see your wash off your makeup and walk around the house in a bright green face mask. You don't second guess why you're roommate is doing jumping jacks in the middle of studying, because you know that's just something she does. Your house with these people is a no judgment zone. When you are crying for the fifth time today, because you are so overwhelmed by this week, your roommates are there to offer you yet another hug. If your roommate just got dumped and you haven't gone out and bought her brownies and wine for the chick flick night you're all about to have, stop reading this article and go get it right now.

In addition to the constant emotional support that you give and receive in your household, there is also academic support. We all have to take those classes that aren't directly related to our major. If you live in a household with a variety of academic majors, the chances are they can help you out with a field that you don't consider to be your forte. If they don't know exactly how to help you out with something, we are lucky to live in an age of technology. Now, you are not just relying on all of the contacts in your phone to help you through your biochemistry homework, you have all the help from your roommates' friends and classmates as well.

I am constantly inspired by my roommates to be a better version of myself. They encourage me to lead a healthy lifestyle, strive for academic excellence, and work hard towards my goals and aspirations. I can't thank them enough for being with me through the thick and thin of life. I know that I will always have a celebration committee in the midst of success and five other shoulders to cry on when times get tricky.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
