Before I begin, I'd like to say this is not an article about women's rights or my personal stance on feminism. And I am not naive enough to think that we don't need men in the world or that all men are the same. However, I do think some things do need to change. I saw a tweet by someone I admire very much and thought her words were put very well.
"One Tree Hill's" lovable Sophia Bush recently tweeted about an encounter she had with a man on a plane:
Aside from the fact that Sophia Bush is someone I look up to, this tweet was unfortunately very relatable. Ladies, how many times have you re-thought about wearing an outfit because you don't want to be called names or look like you're "asking for it." How many times have you left a certain area or pretended to be busy because of how another person around you was making you feel? I'm not sure why it ever came about, but, somewhere along the line it became okay to judge women based on the outfits they wear, the jobs they obtain and the body types that they have.
In this case, Sophia wasn't being harassed because she is famous, she was being harassed because she is a woman. As I mentioned above; I am not naive enough to think that men have the perfect world or that they are all this way, however, making a woman (famous or not) so uncomfortable that she feels like she must move plane seats (leave a store, restaurant, etc) to get away is simply not ok. Sophia states, "You don't get to harass me, or any women, because you think you pay our bills. You don't bro, I DO."
Men, just because we are biologically made differently doesn't mean you're above us. Although we are different in many ways, we are the same in many as well. Women don't owe you anything just because they happened to be born with different body parts- don't make them feel like it.
To the man who wouldn't leave Sophia alone, a simple "hi" probably would have sufficed. Yet you were so focused on being creepy that you blew a chance with a celebrity.
