While college is a wonderful place to learn and explore your passions and ambitions, some of us come in a little directionless. In college, where your major is one of the first things you tell people you meet, there are a couple of responses you typically hear. Here are some of the most common tropes people say when I tell them I'm undecided.
1. When you tell someone you're undecided and they explain how they also changed their major.
It can be nice to hear, even if sometimes they just changed from bio to molecular biology while you're a general mess with no direction whatsoever.
2. When someone asks what your options for majors are and the answer is everything.
I'm thinking about ... science? Of some sort? On the other hand though ... what exactly is linguistics?
3. When the word “exploring” is used far too often in conversation.
Alternatively "discovering" or "trying things out". As much as you hate it though, you know that's how you also explain to people why you haven't declared a major yet.
4. When you’re picking out classes and the options are endless.
When you don't know what requirements you need yet, there are so many things to choose from!
5. When you’re never quite sure if you should take the STEM or the humanities side of the argument.
Who really knows right? There's still time for it to go either way.
6. When people reassure you that half of your fellow students will change their minds about their majors.
Somehow this is not as comforting as it is intended to be? I wouldn't wish this indecisiveness on anyone else!
7. And finally, when you realize you're going to have to choose soon and it's a scary commitment.
But hopefully an amazing one too!
