Student teaching is nothing like I thought it would be. It feels like I have a full time job, along with classes and a paying job, meanwhile, I am trying to balance sleep and a social life and its a recipe for stress. I am in for a wild and crazy ride with my students and I have just accepted that I will be learning more and more every day. Here are some revelations that I have had about student teaching:
1. Students will test you.
I have had students ask me to do things that they know that their regular teacher wouldn't make them do, because they want to test me and see what they can get away with.
2. There will seem like there is never enough time in the day.
As a student teacher you will be mentally exhausted and still have to grade papers and assignments, while worrying about your own school work and job (if you have one, which I don't recommend, unless necessary).
3. You will love that feeling of getting through someone.
Being able to help a student through something that they had originally struggled with will make you feel like a rock star.
4. Students will ask you a lot of questions that don't have to do with the assignment.
"How old are you?"
"Are you like a real teacher?"
"Are you allowed to give us detention?"
5. Not all of the students will like you.
As rough as it is, not all of the students will appreciate your zany sense of humor or want to do what you assign. That is inevitable. But some students will be excited to see you be glad that they're in your class and that will make up for it.
Student teaching is not easy, but keep your head up and remember that you won't always be student teaching and have to be a master juggler. Most importantly, try to have fun and learn something from your supervising teacher. Good luck future teachers!
