What Being In A Sorority Means To me

Greek life is nothing you expected, but everything you were looking for.

This past week, sororities held fall recruitment at Northwest Missouri State University. A question that has been a common theme throughout the past week has been, "What does Sigma Kappa, or even being in a sorority mean to you?" Here are some words that come to my mind when asked what being in a sorority means to me.

Sisterhood

The sisterhood and friendship that you will experience through Greek life and joining a sorority is unlike any other that I have ever experienced in my life. Not only have I gained one hundred plus sisters through joining a sorority, but I have gained one hundred plus friends. I might not always talk to everybody in my sorority, but I know that they will always have my back.

Not a day goes by that I don't see a sister while walking around campus, ready to greet me with a friendly wave and smile. If I ever need help with a class or just advice in general, I know that I can always count on somebody in my sorority to help me out. If I need somebody to cry with during a bad day, I know that somebody will always be there for me.

Through joining a sorority I have found not only my bridesmaids, but an amazing group of friends, that I get to call my sisters, for life. I have found my home away from home and gained a new family.

Philanthropy

Every Greek chapter has their own unique philanthropies that they help out with. I never really realized the significance of philanthropy until after I joined a sorority. All around the world, Greek chapters are doing amazing things. From simply volunteering in the community, to helping out with national organizations, Greek chapters are making a huge difference.

I never knew that volunteering could be so much fun, but my sorority has helped to prove me wrong. Through joining Greek life, I have learned that volunteering can be so much fun and heartwarming.

Future Opportunities

Through joining a sorority, I know that I have gained a wide array of future opportunities. I have learned that networking is very important to do throughout my chapter, and one of these ladies might even be able to help me out with finding a job in the future.

Joining a sorority has also helped me meet members from other Greek life chapters and organizations on campus. These chapters and organizations could even potentially help me out with my future endeavors.

Loyalty and Friendship

Similar to what I discussed about sisterhood, I have learned that the loyalty and friendship my sisters provide is something that is very unique. I know that I have gained friendships that will last a lifetime.

I know that my sisters are loyal and will always have my back, regardless of the situation I am faced with. I have gained many unique friendships through joining a sorority, friendships unlike any I have ever made before.

Academic Support and Encouragement

Having over one hundred sisters means always having somebody to study with. More than likely a sister has taken the same class that you have, so finding help with a class isn't to hard to do. My sisters are always sending support and encouragement my way when I need it the most. Required study hours help push you to be the best that you can be and study as many hours that you can. My sorority pushes me to my full potential, to help me be the best that I can be.

There are sooo many other words that come to mind when considering what my sorority means to me, but this article would be wayyyyy to long if I tried to list all of them.

Even though Greek life is often given a bad rap, I will be forever grateful for the opportunities it has provided me with, and I can't wait to see what memories I will make in my sorority through my next few years of college.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
