Being Single Does Not Mean You Have To Hate Valentine's Day

I do not need anyone to complete me and neither do you.

January always seems to be a pretty bland month after the rush of the holiday season, so by the time February rolls around I am desperate for a holiday. Unfortunately, all there is, is Valentine's Day, and if you are anything like me you are probably not a candidate to celebrate. That's right. Valentine's Day is coming, and I am once again single. In fact, I have never been in a relationship on Valentine's Day, or any day for that matter.

The last time I celebrated Valentine's day would probably have to be in elementary school when everyone used to exchange little cards in class. Back then, it was such a difficult decision whether I was going to get the puppy or Hannah Montana Valentines and who I was going to give that extra bit of candy. Nowadays, all I have to look forward to is the sympathy chocolate from my parents, but being away from home I might not even get that.

Does my disposition against this couple's holiday lead me to despise it? No, actually it is quite the opposite. Valentine's Day may not be for me, but seeing others enjoy the holiday is the absolute best. My Instagram feed suddenly becomes ten times more adorable with everyone's date nights and gift exchanges. Plus, there is great outfit inspiration around every corner when suddenly every girl has exchanged her Lululemon leggings for dresses, skirts, and actual pants.

The Notebook on repeat with the girls while gorging on junk food. You might even head out for a manicure, because if no one else is going to, you got to treat yourself. That manicure may be followed by an impromptu shopping trip, because let's be real, that heart themed decor would look adorable in your dorm.

On top of that, nothing beats a handmade Valentine, especially from a little kid. You may have to ask them to explain their abstract representation of love, but the message is clear. Even if it is covering you with an unnecessary amount of glitter, it is the most precious gift. Maybe you got a handmade card from someone a bit older and that is as equally important. Some people may get a fancy dinner or a diamond ring this Valentine's Day, but that handmade card tops them all.

This is not to say that I am immune from that twinge of jealousy when I see all these cute couples. There are times when I cannot help but wish that it was me. Being a college student who has not even had her first kiss yet is not exactly typical. However, that is alright, because I just have not met the right person. God will bring that person along when the time is right. After all, I do not anyone to complete me and neither do you. A significant other does not complete you. Instead, they compliment you.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.
