We all have that one "first job" we enjoy, others may end up hating their first job, but I loved it so much that I've kept the same job for the last 5 years. I've been a server since right around age 15, I started at a small mom and pop style restaurant. I loved that christian atmosphere and how well they were with high school students schedules. I'll never forget that "first" job.
I have now moved on to Applebee's, I've been with Applebee's for little over a year! Applebee's has taught me several different life lessons, such as friendships, teamwork, and what it means to be a good server, but it also showed me how coworkers can become family. I love my Applebee's family! No matter where I've worked I've always found a family to love and enjoy talking too and playing jokes on them.
Being a server people may think its pointless or stupid, but its a way to make money and it also teaches life lessons. It helps keep your brain going and thinking about all the different steps you have to do just for one table. And if you're an opener or a clloser you have a bigger check list to do just to make sure your ready to open or close the store.
Communication is key
Being a server you have to be able to communicate not only your guest, but also to your coworkers. Because you never know when a big top (a larger group) may walk through the door and you notice they get sat in your section, you'll need the help. If coworkers didn't talk nothing ever would be done, or not done correctly.
Being a server isn't about being fast at what you do, but its about getting the job done and making the guest that come in feel welcomed and want to come back and eat again.
Often times I see other servers only try to be fast but not as caring towards their guest. I believe being more caring towards them makes them have a more enjoyable experience while dining in.
I've been a server for almost 6 years, its the only profession I know, somedays I love it a lot and somedays I find myself questioning why I chose this area. But the more I think about it the more I'm fine with spending my years while in college waiting tables because I love talking to all sorts of people.
People ask me why I stay being a server and I always tell them its because I'm a people person and its super flexible with my schedule and allows me to stay in school and work. I just get so much joy working as a server and being able to talk to a whole bunch of people that come through the door each night. Even though, I may only see those tables once or even once in awhile I try to make an impact to make them want to come back again.
