Being Present Over Perfect

Why spend your life thinking about the next thing, when you could experience moments that take your breath away.

So often I find myself being caught up in the future and trying to be perfect instead of enjoying the moments and the miracles that are right in front of me.

With the New Year coming up (holy cow can't believe it's going to be 2017) I was thinking about, as most of us do, some things I would like to work hard at changing in my life. Looking back on this year, there were many ups and many downs with many things that I would like to change but the one thing that stuck out to me through all of it was that most of my problems steamed from not being content or satisfied with my life at the moment. My future is full of unknowns and a lot of fear comes with that. Financial stability, finding a job, maintaining relationships. Getting caught up and honestly obsessed with the future can lead to dissatisfaction in all areas of your life which then leads to missing out on all that life has for you in the exact moment you are in. I have witnessed first-hand what living in the future rather than the present can do to your whole mental state. You feel drained, are filled with stress and worry, and your relationships with people suffer.

The root cause of living in the future is from trying to be perfect. The reason I obsess over the "what's going to happen in the next moment" rather than being in the moment is because I want that next moment to be perfect. I want to make everything in my life perfect when in reality nothing is ever perfect. But I've come to found that when living in the present, you can have perfect moments. You can have brief pauses in your life that fill you with so much love, joy, and happiness. You can make deep connections with people where bonds between each other can be formed. And that's perfect. That's beautiful.

"Most humans are never fully present in the now, because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss out on your whole life, which is never not now. And that's a revelation for some people: to realize that your life is only ever now" - Eckhart Tolle

It's okay to think about the future. It's okay to dream. Yes, have big dreams and make big plans! But when it becomes an objective to be perfect or full of worry and fear that's when it becomes a real problem. When you feel yourself slipping into that dark area where your future is all you can think about, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Then open your eyes and realize the world around you and all the ways you can experience it to it's fullest.

My New Years Resolution is going to be to live in the present. Now is all WE have and time is so precious. So, let's embark on this journey together!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
