"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity." -John F. Kennedy
Physical activity is one of the major keys to living a healthier life. It is important for a whole host of reasons, not just simply being strong or losing weight, although those are added benefits. Here are some reasons why the average adult should be physically active for at least 150 minutes per week:
1. Stimulate the Brain
Physically activity does more than just work the body, it gets the brain working more efficiently. In many activities, you have to think about what you are doing and what is happening around you, stimulating our brain's thought processes. Physical activity also boosts endorphins, improving mood and self-esteem. Because of this endorphin release, you may find yourself feeling better, having better mental health, and preventing illnesses such as depression.
Physical activity can also help relieve stress. Choose your favorite activity, then go do thirty minutes of it. Tune out, shut off your phone and just be quiet for a bit. Focus only on that activity, breathe, and let it go.
2. Heart Health
The risk of developing diseases such as Cardiovascular Disease, (CVD) type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, etc. is decreased in those who exercise at least 150 minutes per week. Getting your heartbeat up and your blood pumping may not prevent those diseases completely, but it sure can lower your risk.
3. Prevent Injury
You might be thinking, 'I could get seriously injured by DOING physical activity, how can it PREVENT injury?' but it can. By building your muscle strength, you may actually prevent injury. The stronger you are, the less likely you are to pull a muscle or injure yourself just randomly.
4. Maintain a Healthy Weight
A safe, healthy weight is important to a healthy life. By being active and burning fat/calories and increasing muscle, as well as eating right and drinking water, you may be able to lose weight to get to a healthier one, or maintain your weight. A healthy weight alone can also improve self-esteem, improve your heart health, prevent injury, and so much more.
5. Improve Sleep Quality
By tiring out your body, your mind will race less and your sleep will improve. A quiet, tired mind and body will rest better and be able to go into REM sleep, where your body restores itself.
6. Live Longer
Studies have shown that those who are more physically active than others live longer. Physical activity improves the overall quality of your life in so many ways, making you mentally, emotionally, and physically stronger, adding on years to your life.
7. Meet New People and Have Fun
Joining a gym, yoga studio, or club sport is a great way to connect with others who enjoy the same activities as you, and meet new friends. Studies have shown that people who are physically active with a friend may be more motivated and maintain their plan/routine than those who are active on their own.
How Do I Become Physically Active?
Note I have not mentioned the work EXERCISE at all. Being physically active does not have to involve certain exercises, a gym membership, or anything other than yourself. Exercise often is portrayed as something we have to do, something we don't want to do, or something that isn't fun. But being physically active can be fun, and something we look forward to, because we can customize it to fit our likes and our schedules. Physical activity can be getting outside and taking your dog for a walk or run, practicing yoga, (especially if you are getting your heartbeat up) joining an adult soccer or softball team, playing a sport with your kids, or joining a gym and going there, if that is something you truly enjoy. Enjoyment is the key to physical activity. The more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to make time for it.
Find a way to get your body moving for at least 150 minutes each week. That could mean (3) 50 minute sessions per week, (5) 30 minute sessions per week, or any combination that works for you and fits in your schedule.
