No. I am not implying being obsessed with a person or being creepy will help you in life. I am talking about being obsessed with, say, maybe a good exercise regime, learning to cook, studying to receive better grades or being deliberate in becoming a better person.
The biggest mistake I realize I, and many others I know, have made many times is to be obsessed with people rather than ideas. Have you ever been so obsessed with an idea or a task that you felt unnaturally too motivated to get the work done? And when the task was done, do you remember the happiness that you felt? This is what happens when you are obsessed with the jobs and tasks and ideas that make you grow. You grow. Exponentially.
It is a very hard change to make in one's life to be obsessed with making your life better. It sounds weird, right? I mean, who doesn't want to make their lives better? Everyone does. But do you really want it that bad or are you just a passive observer as your life goes down the drain wasting your time on activities that serve no purpose, not even entertainment? When you want to make your life better, you get obsessed with that idea, just like people do when they want someone. And we all know how that turns out, right?
Obsession usually always has a negative connotation to it. I mean this word has been used in the wrong sense for so long that it has been forgotten that you can be obsessed about something and still not be a sociopath like our idiot boxes have made us believe.
Of course, there is a silver lining here. Don’t expect results just because you are obsessed with something. Thinking about something doesn’t work. You have to actually do the labor along with the thinking to see results. More often than not, we don’t get the results we wanted to see. But isn’t that what life is? It isn’t a straight line -- never has been and never will be. This shouldn’t demotivate you to move on to other projects or ideas.
So it all comes down to making the right decision about what you want to be obsessed with -- what makes you wake up in the morning and think, "there is so much to do today, I should get started as soon as possible." Don’t be obsessed with things which make you unhappy.
