Being A Northern Girl In The South

It's like a whole different country between the North and the South, but many people that go to southern schools are from the North. Here are some of the differences between them that I've noticed.....

1. Bagels are worse

The bagels up north are definitely at least 100 times better than any place in the South, especially if you're from New Jersey. Every time I go home the first thing I do is run to my favorite bagel spot and get a good bagel. I have not run into any place yet that even holds a candle to my favorite bagel shop.

2. Everyone thinks that 60 degrees is freezing cold

People in the South start to wear Parkas when it is below 60 degrees. Up North in November, 60 degrees would be a blessing from the gods. People up north wear shorts until it's snowing outside. I remember going to school when it was like 10 degrees outside and just hating life. In the South, college is canceled if they think it might snow. If there is a little frost then you would think the world is ending in the south. However, in the North they make you truck your ass to school even if the snow is up to your knees and you have to shovel your car out of the pile of snow, and then they wonder why you were late for class. The schools up North are freezing in the winter, I remember my school not having heat in some classrooms. It was the worst thing ever. You can always tell who is from the north at your college because of what they are wearing when it is 70 degrees or below outside.

3. Pizza is better up North

Pizza is so much better in the North than in the South. Only like two places sell pizza by the slice, so either you get a pie or nothing at all. There is also a larger variety of pizza up North. From buffalo chicken to white pizza, the dough is also much better up North. The pizza is not has greasy either. Up North you get real New York pizza that everyone raves about. If you talk to anyone from the New Jersey/ New York area you will here them rave about how good their pizza is compared to anywhere else.

4. No diners at all

People in the South do not understand what it's like to go to a diner at two a.m. and stuff your face with greasy, well cooked food. Diners are the best thing ever. If you are looking for some greasy, just not-good-for-you-food up North you go to a diner. In the South everything closes early and you just do not have that place. There are BBQ places out of the ass in the South, but that's about it. If you are a vegetarian, the South is kind of a hard place to be if you are looking for a late night snack. Diners are the best place for a late night snack. Open 24 hrs and always greasy.

The best thing about being a northern girl in the South is that you start to become southern. You start to get really cold when it is below 70 degrees, and start to love BBQ no matter the time of day. Going home is good break, but it is always too cold and you are never prepared to deal with how cold it is.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
