When I was a senior in high school, everyone kept hounding me to get a "real job." I decided I didn't want one, so I became a nanny, and from that moment, my life was never the same. I fell in love with chasing toddlers, playing make-believe, and intense games of hide and go seek. Up until my sophomore year of college I worked part time nanny gigs here and there, and then I found a family one summer and everything clicked.
When I say everything clicked, I mean I fell in love with these girls after one week. After one week with these girls, I knew I was in the wrong major. Sure, I loved business, but I knew I would not be happy unless I was working with children.
Now don't get me wrong, being a nanny is not all easy. You have children yelling at you for breakfast before you are even one cup of coffee in. You have to fix boo boos, make meals, change diapers, wipe butts and boogies. It's a lot of responsibility and I am absolutely exhausted at the end of each day, but I wouldn't change it for the world.
Nothing has ever made me as happy as nannying makes me. I get to take my kiddos on summer adventures to the zoo, the aquarium, and even the butterfly fiesta. I get to sing Taylor Swift at the top of my lungs every day and dance to Fight Song without an ounce of judgement. We get to play tickle monster and duck duck stinky goose.
The best thing in the world is when those two little faces look up at me at the end of the day, and tell me that today was the best day ever. Nothing makes me feel more loved than when they squeeze me tight before nap and tell me they love to the moon and back. And nothing makes my heart more than when one of them is sick, or hurt, or I have to say goodbye at the end of the day.
I can truly tell you that being a nanny changed my life for the better. These kids helped me in more ways than they will ever know they brought my life joy, hope, love, and direction. I can't really explain what it is, but taking care of them every day has made me the happiest I have ever been these past few summers.
I know I'm not their mom or dad, but I am their best friend, their teacher, their boo boo kisser, and adventure partner. I can't imagine my life without them, and I hope that everyone finds something that they love this much and something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
