When I decided I would attend Virginia Tech, a lot of people asked, "Oh, are going into engineering?" No. No, I am not. And nothing's wrong with that.
Just because a school is best known for its technical colleges and majors, does't mean that's all they have to offer. Honestly, I couldn't be happier with my decision to study Communications at Virginia Tech. My friends, on the other hand, hate me for it.
Of course, they don't actually hate me. But they do envy me. Obviously, you should choose a major that makes you happy and will prepare you for the career that you want. Becoming an engineer, veterinarian, statistician, or any other science or math based career is going to require many hours of homework, studying, and tests. College in general really is just tons of homework and tests, but Liberal Arts majors definitely have it easier.
Over half of the people that live on my hall in my dorm are majoring in engineering, neuroscience, or some crazy shit I could never see myself doing. They spend hours doing chemistry and biology and cramming for a test on things they just can't seem to understand. And that's why I love my major. Liberal arts is easier; it's just fact. Why? Because even when you are doing work, it doesn't feel like actual work. There aren't any formulas or oxidation numbers or ridiculous equations you have to memorize. Everything you do feels like you're learning common facts. Take communications, my major, for example. Everyone knows how to communicate, duh. And some people shame majors like this that seem to be so easy. I mean yeah, I do think it's easy; I'll admit it. But just because something seems easy on the outside doesn't mean it is to everyone, or that just any old person can do it.
Liberal arts majors work with people and that's the best part about it. Whether it be fashion, religion, journalism, education, or anything in between, your major matters. You might not be finding the cure to cancer with some insane plant you found and turned into medicine, but you help people grow and learn, just not in the sciencey, mathy way that others do. You provide social change.
So I'll take my paper about how to improve my public speaking skills over studying the entire weekend for a test that I'm gonna fail anyway any day.
