Being Captain
What is it like to be a captain of a team? No matter what sport you play; if you are the captain of a team, you are a role model and a leader for your teammates. When there is practice, the captain is the first one there. When there is a game, the captain is prepared and focused. When there is a problem, your teammates come to you. When your team needs motivation, you need to be the one to step up and give encouraging words. You can never give up. If you give up, you lose your whole team.
The pressure is on. On and off the field you are the captain. Have class the morning after a huge away game? Better be in the classroom and ready to go. When there is an issue or just a question needing to be answered; all eyes are on the captain to know what's going on. The captain needs to be quick to solve problems and find solutions. The captain has to be fair and consistent. If the captain is late for practice, why should the other players be on time? With all that pressure; who can imagine wanting that position?
Being the captain is an honor. You lead by example and wear your school's gear with pride. You are on a team supporting your school and playing a sport you love with people that look up to you. How much better can it get?
At practice you push your team to play to their max and to improve. You want your team to improve both individually and as a team. You help correct mistakes and make constructive criticism when necessary. During games; you provide inspiration and motivation. When your team is about to give up, they need you to pick them up. You congratulate your team with victories and reflect and learn from the games you lost.
When the buzzer sounds and your team received the victory, there is nothing better than running to your bench and bear hugging all of your teammates. Knowing all of the blood, sweat, hard work, and tears have paid off. Knowing this is your team, you have their back and they have yours. Also importantly, making your coach and community proud. Just remember, it's not about the role of being a captain. It's about bringing your team to glory TOGETHER.
