If you aren't a Buffalo Bills or Sabres fan, then you would probably think being a fan must be the worst thing ever.
Every year both teams have sad losing records, and if we are being hopeful: very average. Both teams almost never make the playoffs, and it seems like no matter what coach or players the teams get they still just can't succeed.
To a person from the outside looking at Buffalo fans, it would seem like the worst thing ever to have your hopes extremely high every...single...year, and then be let down just a few games into the season. But despite year after year of heartbreak, being a Buffalo fan is actually the best decision someone can make in their life.
Let's start by talking about the Bills. The Bills football team has been trying to rebuild for who even knows how many years. For a young person like myself, I only hear the stories of "the good old days," (even though that only led to heartbreaking losses at the Super Bowl for four years straight), and how the Bills used to be awesome.
Ever since I have been a fan they have been awful. But I love nothing more during football season than to take a two and a half hour drive up to Buffalo to go watch a game. There is such a sense of pride in the air. Even though we have nothing to be happy about, because it's probably going to be just another awful season, every Sunday there is a great sense of hope from fans.
It's like the whole city of Buffalo has come together to tailgate, toss a football around, and watch a football game where no matter what happens everyone will be cheering for the Bills all game long. Maybe it's because Buffalo is one of the smallest cities to have a pro team, so community just comes naturally. But on a game day, the whole city and all of the fans get so excited. It's like everyone up there is family and you're a part of something so much bigger than just a football game.
Then, there are the Buffalo Sabres. I've got to say that Buffalo is one of the biggest hockey towns out there. It was the city of Buffalo that had the most amount of viewers for the NHL all-star game in 2015 (even though only two players from the team actually played in the game).
This makes for awesome Sabres games. In an NHL season, there are 82 games, 41 home and 41 away. Many of the games are on weeknights, and obviously there are a lot of games. But even with a pretty bad team every year, they have almost no problem selling out every home game. This is a major feat for Buffalo seeing as how they have the second largest hockey arena, just second to MSG in New York City.
Being a Buffalo fan can give you an extraordinary sense of community. Both teams are owned by Terry and Kim Pegula. The Buffalo Bills have training camp in Rochester, the nearest city in New York State to Buffalo, and the Sabre's AHL team is also in Rochester.
Both teams have one of the largest fan bases, or as we call our fan base a "fan base," in both leagues. Being a Buffalo sports fan (although heartbreaking at times) is really an awesome thing to be able to call yourself. I am truly honored to be a part of this family, as I know all of my fellow Bills and Sabres fans are.
