Learning a new language can be very difficult. There are a lot of struggles, but also a lot of benefits. You learn a lot about yourself while learning a new language. There are also a lot of things that you just can't avoid when you're bilingual. Here are some things that we all know about being bilingual...
1. Sometimes your languages get mixed up.
I find myself mixing my languages together to create some hybrid language that nobody understands.
2. Your notes are in different languages.
My notes in class switch from Spanish to English because sometimes the Spanish word is just shorter or easier to write.
3. Sometimes you forget words in your first language.
When you speak your second language a lot, it is easy for your primary language skills to start slacking.
4. Sometimes it's frustrating that other people don't know your second language.
If I have been speaking in Spanish in class all day, it is very frustrating when I want to keep speaking Spanish but none of my family knows Spanish. Come on mom, can't you learn another language for your first born child?
5. You like to show off your skills.
If there is a chance to speak in your second language to impress your family and friends, you will take full advantage of it.
6. You have learned how dedicated you are.
It takes a lot of work to learn another language. If you have become fluent, you have learned how extremely dedicated you are to that language.. and you are extremely proud of yourself.
These things can be a struggle, but they can also teach you a lot about yourself. You learn just how far you can push your brain until you finally reach success (or a mental breakdown). But it's worth it.
Learning another language is extremely difficult, but it has a lot of benefits and is SO much fun. Keep working at that second language!
