Behind The Scenes Of "Greater Purpose"

A look into what developed into my first ever bible study/sermon series

In this week's article, I wanted to give a little background and behind the scenes look into my first ever Bible Study/Sermon series I've written, "Greater Purpose." I have a subsequent one I will be working on later in the summer on the Parables of Jesus, titled "Teachings of Jesus: The Parables." Like this series, I will give a behind the scenes of that series as well. My articles throughout the summer will be an outline and commentary of the previous week's study (they'll be two weeks behind publishing-wise, but one week behind typing, if that makes sense), to hopefully spark discussion among all my readers.

The idea for "Greater Purpose" came during the fall semester. At FBC Eleven, the 11:00 AM service at First Baptist Jacksonville, we were going through a series called "Greater," which showed how Jesus was a greater version of various heroes throughout the Bible, such as Abraham, Moses, Jonah, Daniel, and King David. One Sunday after FBC Eleven, it dawned on me. God calls us to such a greater purpose than we could ever imagine.

Let me pause for a second. Think about this. Have you wondered if you're fulfilling the purpose God has for your life? Have you ever thought you weren't where God needed you to be? Or, have you wondered what purpose God has for you to fulfill through your life?

These were the questions I pondered throughout the early stages of the development of this series. Being entirely transparent, I have pondered these questions quite a bit throughout my college career. I have kept these questions and thoughts in mind as I wrote this series. These experiences, I pray, will help relate to youth in a way that shows that, while we may be unsure whether we are fulfilling God's purpose for our lives, He has a greater purpose for us than we could ever understand!

Throughout the series, we will examine seven aspects of our lives where God has a greater purpose for us: His call for our lives, His will for our lives, our reconciliation through Him, His call for us to be a better friend, His call for unity, His call to fulfill/do His word, and His call to control our tongue. Each of these will have an in-depth discussion each week, and I can't wait to share each one with you all, and a few thoughts from after the study each week.

The first few sermons of the series were developed and came together extremely well at Java Jolt. Before I go any further, shout out to Java Jolt for the coffee that gave me the spark and ambition to bring this series to life. I also want to thank God for giving me the words to say in the notes and key points of the series, because I know I couldn't do it on my own.

Throughout all of the development of this series, there have been tremendous amounts of hours of prayer to prepare and get things ready for this series. It is my prayer that, as this series gets started May 1 with the youth, that God will speak through me and let His presence known throughout the series and summer.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
