The beginning of a school year is always challenging time for everyone. Often both professors and students alike fall out a routine that is consistent and healthy. For one of the first times in my adult life I found myself in the unfortunate circumstance of being out of routine. Normally, I am someone who likes to go to sleep somewhat early usually around 10-11pm every night. This past summer I allowed myself to let go some and start staying up routinely until around 1am. This pushed my wake up time from 6-7am to closer to 9am. This caused issues as I would need to wake up for Track and Field practices and school. I turned to sleep aids such as NyQuil and melatonin but I would have some nights where I still was up until 3-4am. Like food and going to the bathroom it is impossible to focus and perform your best when you are lacking sleep. My main motivation became the need to rest instead of being excited about any of the new classes I was taking or new people I would be meeting. The main lesson I learned from the first couple of weeks of school was setting a routine can be extremely difficult. One thing that has helped me recently was practicing mindfullness. In a nutshell what this means for me is parcing out anything in my life that activates my brain before I try to fall asleep. Despite the fact that I am writing this for a social media class one aspect of that for me is staying off of social media. Seeing people are staying up and partying during the first weeks back to school is one thing that stimulates me and made my brain go rampant. Which brings me to lesson number two that I have learned recently: It is hard to not have knowledge of anything in today's world.
