Beginning A Minimalist Life

Where to start when you've got too much stuff.

I'll admit it right off the bat, I'm a hoarder. I'm not like a crazy hoarder of just junk, I'm a memory hoarder. I've got diaries and pictures dating back to junior high and probably further than that. Do I really need those things? Probably not. Am I hesitant to throw them away? Definitely. If you've noticed a lot of items you don't use or need at all but can't throw them away I recommend reading "Spark Joy" and "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo.

Even check out a bunch of YouTube videos with her in them. (She's too cute and super organized!!) I've become addicted to watching minimalism videos lately and just need to put everything I've learned into action. I started by evaluating all of my belongings, sorting the things I use frequently and need apart from the things I've kept around just because I had a feeling I might need them. I'll end up posting an update article later on about how minimalizing my belongings has gone, but so far I've cut my hoarded crap in half which is great. The main concept I've kept in mind when I've evaluated my stuff is what the book Spark Joy is about, does this item spark joy? Does it make me happy? Do I feel something special when I hold it? If it doesn't, I put it aside to throw away or donate. The only items I'll continue to hold onto in my hoard pile are special photos and albums that I treasure and little trinkets that mean a lot to me.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
