A Beginner's Guide To The Gym

I was never really the athletic type and I didn't play a lot of sports in high school (shout out to my fellow music and drama enthusiasts!). I also never really had a strong liking for working out. I didn't mind it, but the only exercises I really enjoyed were walking and swimming. But in the past few years I have tried many different types of exercises including spinning, pilates, kickboxing, and yoga, and I try to make an occasional appearance at the gym.

I have begun a journey to better my health and well-being, and going to the gym (or currently working out at home) has become part of that plan! I've noticed that working out doesn't feel like so much of a hassle anymore and I benefit from the release of endorphins (neurotransmitters in the brain) that occurs during exercise! So if you're worried about not knowing what do, here is my beginner's guide to the gym!

Bring everything you need.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you don't want to end up at the gym and then realize you forgot something! Make sure that you have exercise clothes, socks and tennis shoes, and a hair tie if you have long hair. You may also want to bring a change of clothes if you're going somewhere else immediately after. If you're going to play a sport, bring your equipment just in case your gym doesn't have it. If you're going to a floor class, you may want to bring a yoga mat. Most importantly, bring some WATER! If your gym does not have drinking fountains, you don't want to get dehydrated.

Prepare yourself.

There's nothing worse than getting to the gym and not knowing what to do. Before you go, either make a plan for the week or decide what you want to do that day. You can make up your own workouts or find some pre-set workouts on YouTube or Pinterest that you like! Whether you want to do cardio, strength, stretching, lifting, etc., it's better to have a plan and be prepared.

Make it a routine.

I find that it's easier to keep up your gym habit if you make it a habit! When you're looking at your schedule, see if you can make gym time a consistency. Whether you go twice a week or five days a week- make it part of your routine. If you find yourself saying "I don't know when I can go to the gym," you probably won't end up going at all.

Take a class.

Going to a group class is the easiest way to ease yourself into the gym. The time is already set for you and the instructor is there guide and assist you. Find a class that interests you, bring along some friends, and have fun!

MUSIC.

Some people like to work out in silence or to the sound of their own thoughts. I don't know how they do it because I find that a great music playlist helps me get through a workout. I like to choose songs that have a quick tempo, are upbeat, and rev up my energy and focus!

Ask for help.

Do not be afraid to ask someone else for help! If you don't know how to work equipment or a machine, it's safer to ask an employee or someone around you for assistance than try to figure it out yourself.

Warm up/Cool down.

It's important to have a warm up before your workout to engage your muscles and get your body energized. Some light cardio or dynamic stretching are great ways to warm up. Having a cool-down section of your workout is also important for bringing your heart rate back to a normal level and putting a final end to your workout. Also remember to stretch after your workouts to prevent injury and sore muscles!

Confidence.

Finally, be confident! Not only are you improving your health by going the gym, but it also increases self-esteem. Being a beginner at the gym can be intimidating, but have confidence in yourself and don't be afraid to try something new! Know your plan and be prepared to crush your workout!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
