Beginner's Guide To Bath: The Learning Curve

I'm learning new things outside the classroom too

Beginner's Guide To Bath: The Learning Curve
Hayley Pisciotti

Last week I wrote about my adjustment to Bath, England as I start to call this city my home for the next four months. As a student abroad, I knew my semester would be full of new learning experiences, but I thought most of it would take place in the classroom-- with the classes like Mythologizing Shakespeare, Jane Austen, British Detective Fictions, and Film Screenwriting, my curriculum would surely expand my knowledge. However, I'm also learning new things everyday away from my studies. A new environment comes with a new list of things to learn how to do, so here's what I've learned so far!

1. How to work a French Press

It took a few tries before I wasn't eating my coffee in the morning. And I'll admit, I've been spoiled in the past by my Keurig at home but (with the help of one of my flatmates) I am getting progressively better at using the French Press in our flatt!

2. How to dress in layers

Guess how many layers I'm wearing in this picture--give up? Five. England isn't exactly known for it's topical weather. Mastering the art of layers comes with practice and the willingness to throw fashion sense out the window for the sake of keeping warm. When visiting place like Stonehenge, which has nothing around to block harsh winds, layers are important.

3. How to read three books at a time

The picture above shows all the books for my classes this semester. By May, all of these novels and plays will be read, along with a number of secondary articles on my list. Although I've had to read for classes before, it has never been as intense as this. I'm averaging three books a week. This is definitely a skill that will be useful down the road

3. How to live without my phone

Besides the occasion snapchat and instagram posts, I don't look at my phone while I'm out. I keep it on airplane mode and enjoy the sights in front of me. For example, pictures above is the Royal Crescent, which sits on the edge of Victoria Park. And I live right behind it! On a quiet morning, with a blue sky and lots of layers, it's a beautiful walk.

4. How to try new things

Yes, there is a bite taken out of it. I couldn't wait before taking a picture. #sorrynotsorry

It has only been two week since I've been here and most of my meals I've cooked in the kitchen of my apartment, but I have tried the English pasty. My favorite so far has been the basil, tomato, and cheese filled one. I'm hope to find good Thai food and Fish & Chips soon!

I'm sure in a few months this list will grow, but for now I'll stick to my numerous books, many layers of clothes, and limited phone time.

Check in next week for my next installment of this adventure!

If I have learned one thing in my lifetime, it is that friends are a privilege. No one is required to give you their company and yet there is some sort of shared connection that keeps you together. And from that friendship, you may even find yourself lucky enough to have a few more friends, thus forming a group. Here are just a few signs that prove your current friend group is the ultimate friend group.

When it comes to television, there’s very few sets of on-screen siblings that a lot of us can relate to. Only those who have grown up with siblings knows what it feels like to fight, prank, and love a sibling. Ross and Monica Geller were definitely overbearing and overshared some things through the series of "Friends," but they captured perfectly what real siblings feel in real life. Some of their antics were funny, some were a little weird but all of them are completely relatable to brothers and sisters everywhere.

College is a great place to meet people, especially through Greek life. If you look closely at sororities, you'll quickly see there are many different types of girls you will meet.

1. The Legacy.

Her sister was a member, her mom was a member, all of her aunts were members, and her grandma was a member. She has been waiting her whole life to wear these letters and cried hysterically on bid day. Although she can act entitled at times, you can bet she is one of the most enthusiastic sisters.

Every kid in college and/or high school dreams of summer the moment they walk through the door on the first day back in September. It becomes harder and harder to focus in classes and while doing assignments as the days get closer. The winter has been lagging, the days are short and dark, and no one is quite themselves due to lack of energy and sunlight. Let's face it: life is ten times better in the summertime.
