Things To Know Before Going On An Adventure: Part 1

Studying abroad is the most exciting, most stressful thing I've ever done (and I haven't even left yet).

I leave in less than a week to depart for a semester-long trip through Europe. For about two weeks now, I have been constantly counting the days down. I have never been so excited in my life.

And yet, there's something so stressful just thinking about it. Sure, I am absolutely thrilled to spend my fall living on the coast of Greece and going on quite possibly the greatest adventure of my life, but I don't think I realized just how much work went into the preparation before. Over the past three weeks I have been doing extensive research, looking at various activities and accommodations, and even trying to finish taking entire classes in 20 days. It has been a lot of work, trust me. In case you are planning on studying abroad in your near future, let me help prepare you for what you're about to handle.

First off, you will spend a lot of time worrying about what you are going to pack. Now this is not particular to fashion-concerned people, but for anyone, it is hard knowing just how much you will have to pack or what exactly you will need while you are gone. Unless you have been on a three-month-long venture before, you're probably not going to have a clue about what to pack. "Pack for three weeks," they said. Question 1: Okay so pack three weeks' worth of clothes or pack the same amount that I would pack for a three-week-long trip? Answer: Pack as many versatile clothes that you can mix and match together. Whether that's three weeks' worth or less than that (I'd recommend not to go over) is up to you, but know that you will probably re-wear clothes before washing if you don't pack enough. "Don't pack anything that you won't use," they said. Question 2: But what happens if I end up needing this particular item? Answer: If it is something that you can't get while you are overseas, bring it. However, if you can buy a new pair of shoes or another jacket while you are there, leave yourself the extra room in your bag. I have spent many nights scrolling through Pinterest, trying to figure out exactly what I need to pack, and I've re-packed my suitcase about three times now. I still don't know exactly what I need or if I packed all the right things, but there's no exact list of what to pack when you leave. Everyone is different, and we all need our different things, so really it's up to you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
