In a world where eight tons of waste end up in the ocean each year, killing at least two-thirds of the fish in the sea, a company has created something to cut down on pollution and help save marine life.
Saltwater Brewery created an edible plastic six-ring holder for their beer packs. It is made using barley and wheat, is completely biodegradable, and just as efficient as the previous plastic rings.
Buying a six-pack of Saltwater beer in this new and improved packaging will raise the cost to over $10 per pack, with each unit of biodegradable material costing around 10-15 cents. While Saltwater acknowledges this may slow down the adaption of this invention to all breweries, they believe that if all beer companies adapted this item, the cost would drop significantly, and so would the negative impact beer consumers leave on the environment.
In the video on their page, one man claims humans can eat it as well as marine life, so while it probably tastes disgusting, it proves to be harmless, leading to more unharmed animals. Although it's hard to believe people will begin to pay ten bucks for some beer, with an alarming rise in climate change due to humans destroying the Earth by way of pollution, it may very well become the norm. Saltwater even plans to partner with bigger companies to expand the production of these eco-friendly holders in 2017.
