Sleep Is Mandatory

You need it.

Sleep Is Mandatory

There were times when I did not take getting a good night's rest of eight hours seriously. I would get four or six hours of sleep, and go to class the following day. When I did this, I would experience problems with memory and concentration.

Memory is important when it comes to navigating the environment around you. Getting a good night of rest is beneficial, especially as an adult. This study explains the advantages of proper sleep, and the health benefits that come along with it. When you do not get proper rest, you can forget even the smallest tasks. When I am in the library, I tend to forget a flash drive, or homework assignments. These may not be big problems at first, but those situations can be upsetting. In class I may find myself having a weird time of focusing on the task at hand or trying to remember what a classmate told me, sitting right next to me.

The biggest challenge of resting well is running out of time to finish school assignments. The typical college student understands that to get the best grade, you must apply yourself 24/7 and get the task done. Telling your professor that you stayed up all night will only get you an eyebrow raise. It has been discussed that some professors do not take in consideration of the workload that the average student carries, and I believe that. However, I am not going to place blame on anyone else. The way to have both sleep and good grades is time management.

Manage your time ahead of schedule on school or work assignments. Don't wait for the day before your big test to study. You'll end up trying to cram and finish projects at the same time. Even before you schedule for next semester, try to predict how your life will progress through the brunt of work. As an individual, think about how long it takes for you to complete tasks, rather than the predicted number of class hours it will take the average student. I believe that planning ahead to manage your schedule can balance the overall outcome of your position to get to your goals.

Not only does getting a good night of rest improve your memory, it is also said to spur creativity. The study shows that the improvement of memory helps the brain restructure and reorganize thoughts that result in more creativity.Thinking about this, there is nothing to lose when it comes to getting a good night of rest, besides that social media post or that homework assignment you have to catch up to, because of misjudged timing. Make the best of your time, and it will work in favor of you and your need to rest.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
