Recently, Katie Daisy published a book entitled, “How to Be a Wildflower: a Field Guide.” The book doesn’t contain many words; rather pages of beautiful copies of her own illustrated artwork. The point of the book is to inspire. The only words in the book are phrases like, “how to be still,” “There are always flowers for those who want to see them” and “creek swimming and tangled hair.” Every phrase she includes is a mantra on how to live a life of adventure and whimsy.
The reason I love the book so much is because it reminds me that life is best lived appreciating the little things. If you know me, you know my purest joys are in little moments. Whether it be sipping a Topo Chico, walking around town with a friend or enjoying ice cream in a pottery bowl with a silver-plated spoon, these are the things which I cherish most. Daisy’s book is a reminder of the beauty in that way of living.
Life does not need to be lived extravagantly. There is beauty in the wildflowers, there is laughter in swimming in the lake with friends and there is sweetness preparing a fresh salad with a loved one. I truly believe this is how we were meant to live. You do not need the most fancy dress or the newest technology; the best moments are the one’s experienced when you say “yes” to new things, new adventures and new friends.
Start to learn what makes you tick. What are little things in life you love? Do you love handwritten cards? Begin writing to your friends. Do you adore people? Start having dinner parties. If you like pottery or stamps, well, collect them. If you want more flowers in your life – go and buy them. Learn to dwell on the little beauties of life and to embrace the things you love.
So, be a wildflower. Enjoy the open field, bloom and grow to your fullest potential without worrying or wondering what others are doing around you. Enjoy the sunlight, but also know how to experience the rain. Love the companions you have besides you, but be content with moments of aloneness.
