There comes a time when you are growing up where you have all these dreams of who you will become. But more importantly, who you hope and wish to become. The person that the younger version of you took time to create and dream of.
When I was growing up, I wanted to be an artist. Namely, a photographer. I wanted to be able to create art that people could relate to and capture moments that can forever be cherished. All the way up into the beginning of my Senior year of high school, that was the plan. I wanted to be able to travel and capture various photographs of the events I encountered and blog about my experiences. To educate people through my blog entries and photos.
But somewhere along the way, I deterred from that path and found myself in the medical field. Looking back, I can honestly say I cannot remember when this started. Maybe it was through the desire to please my loved ones around me. I figured that if they were happy, so would I. For a while, I was sure that is what I wanted to do.
Soon I quickly learned that that was not the case. I took all your typical pre-med classes and although it was interesting, it was not enough. I lacked the pure passion that everyone else seemed to have. I started finding myself getting internships and jobs unrelated to my major or ‘designated’ career path. Finally, I started reconsidering my current path.
I wish I could say that I knew what I am going to do with my life but I don’t. Truthfully, that is how life is. You do not get to micromanage your life. Instead, you learn more about yourself each day. A wise friend frequently reminds me that “in the end, its you. What makes you happy? What is your passion? Pursue it, because the hard work it takes to make your dreams come true won’t seem like ‘work’. You’ll enjoy what you are doing and soon enough, you are living your dream.”
It takes courage to follow your dreams, and one day I hope that I could write another article stating that I did just that. I hope you do too, because you can achieve so much if you follow and pour your heart into what you do. What are you waiting for? Pursue your dreams. You have only one life to live, and I hope you use it well.
