I was not the girl that came into college excited to join Greek Life right away. To be completely honest, I didn't even know it existed on my campus at all. However, my friends dragged me to a few rushes and I could not be more thankful that they did. I fell in love with Phi Delta Kappa, instantly. The past five weeks of pledging has helped me get to know the most amazing people, learn about the most amazing sorority and turn 15 strangers into 15 of my best friends. Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I have made since I started college and I am so excited to see what the future holds. If you are unsure about joining Greek Life, like I was, here are a few things to think about when making this important decision.
1. Do not be stereotypical or listen to the "horror stories" that you hear. If you have concerns, talk to them about it. Every sorority and fraternity is different and it is up to you to do your research and find which one is the best fit for you.
2. Greek Life is more than just wearing matching shirts and hanging out with one another. Becoming a sister or brother means pledging yourself to their philanthropies, dedicating some of your time to community service and doing your best to represent your letters honorably and respectfully. It is important to understand the time and effort that goes into a sorority. Make sure you are willing to make that commitment.
3. Do you want to be apart of something that is bigger than yourself? For me, becoming a part of a sisterhood was like gaining the older sisters that I never had. It is truly a blessing to have people that are there for you and support you no matter what.
4. Do not be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and try something new. I didn't have a ton of girl friends in high school and never had people to call home. This sorority has given me that and given me the feeling of sisterhood and acceptance that I couldn't find anywhere else.
5. Phi Delta Kappa does not define me. My sisters and I define Phi Delta Kappa. I am honored and proud to wear my letters across my chest and hold the responsibility of representing such an amazing organization.
