If I Were An Elder

Wouldn’t you like to be an elder?

I envision of how it would be

To look on past experiences,

And see where life has taken me

To be among those of the wise

Share my wisdom with you,

Knowing what I’ve been through

And sharing how I’ve made it out

To one day see,

My reflection in a mirror

And while admiring who I’ve become...

To gaze back and see a younger me

I wouldn’t want to be prideful

But to remain humble

Warm and gentle to the touch,

Little ole me will stay the same

Yes, to be an elder

And make fun of the good ole days...

To reminisce with those who’ve stayed

And haven’t passed away

Yes, to be an elder

And drink earl grey tea...

With Haitian bread

I don’t think I’ll drink coffee

To advise the youth

And sing in the church choir

And wear my mother’s hat…

That I’ve already began to do,

Because it isn’t when you lead a ministry,

To then appear all modesty

To be an elder must be really cool...

You get to see your children succeed

By succeed, I mean to make babies

Grandchildren are the best,

They bring excitement and joy...

Feed us til we’re fat

My husband, we’ll meet at a karaoke place...

I’ll be singing to some tune

He’ll be that brave man who runs up,

And yell out, boo

But I’ll be that strong woman that I am

And won’t stop till my song ends...

And he’ll see that I’m brave

And will take me by the hands

We’ll finish the song together

And we’ll call it our own

Now everyone will boo us both

My husband, the soldier,

Will admire my ways

He’ll smile and think I’m the greatest

We’ll share wonderful days

That may not be my story

And I may not marry a solider

That won’t stop me from being,

A great elder

Yes, to be an elder

I can only imagine...

How wonderful to sit back

In my ranch and watch the sunset,

In my rocking chair

To think of how my grandchildren...

Do not call me enough

And yell at their parents

For not disciplining them

Inviting the neighbors for dinner

And talk about good ole television

The ones that I like to watch now...

Or should I say last year

Since college takes up all of my time

Now, my mind doesn’t seem so clear

I wouldn’t feel embarrassed

About the wrinkles

Nor the grey hairs...

Not even for the stretched ears

I’ll love to be an elder,

There’s more to it than what I’ve mentioned

The elder are awesome...

There’s a lot to learn from them,

I hope to aspire to be a great one

This is my most recent poem that I have been writing for a few days and was not intended to offend anyone. I have always picture myself as an elder woman and wondered what it would feel like to literally look back at life and remember all that I can. This poem was written for humor, enjoyment and from personal persepective.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.

Where do we begin when we start talking about our roommates? You practically spend every moment with them, they become your second family and they deal with you at your best and at your absolute worst. They are there to make you laugh just a little harder, cry a little less and make each day a little better. We often forget to thank them for the little things that they do to make college even a tiny bit easier and more fun. This list of 26 things are what you should thank your roommates for right this minute and every day that you live with them.
