Denise Mercedes a blogger and model started a campaign to promote self-confidence and body love. It started out with just a hashtag, #BecauseItsMYBody. Plus size models, bloggers and a lot of others answered the campaign by posting pictures of their body with that hashtag. Mercedes would then take these pictures and post them to the Instagram account @becauseitsmybody.
A lot of people may see these posts of people on social media and think it is a feminist movement. I can see why some may think that because it is many pictures of women, but the Instagram account is open for everyone. In the description of the Instagram account it says "BecauseitsMyBody A campaign dedicated to women and men of all sizes and color!" On the Instagram account you will see that more men are starting to use the hashtag. Mercedes told BuzzFeed "When I started the Instagram campaign, it was women who were using the hashtag, but I made sure to specify that anybody can use the tag and be featured - men, women, tall, short, skinny, plus-size, LGBT, etc."
After Mercedes saw that the Instagram campaign was getting a lot of positive feedback and many people using the bag, so she launched a website. She picked friends, activists and models for the campaign, they are all different body shapes and sizes. The campaign can be more affective if the photos and campaign is more diverse she thought. Mercedes wants to use different ideas and different people who would like to join the campaign and support it.I think this campaign of people coming together to celebrate their bodies is very inspiring. It is amazing to see how many people are posting pictures with their bodies showing their self confidence hoping it will inspire others. It is also great to see the campaign growing from just someone creating a hashtag to it turning into a website with photoshoots. I hope this is a campaign that continues to grow and stay around.
