Beauty in America

The "Right Kind" Of Beauty

There are lots of beautifuls in America, but you have to be the right kind of beautiful in order to be treated fairly. America is the land of equal opportunity though, right? Or do we implicitly oppress our nation, sometimes without even realizing. Beauty is what is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it is also a tool consciously and unconsciously used to get special privileges in life. Beauty is how close you are to the American ideal. The most beautiful type of person, according to America, is white, blonde, and blue eyed.

The closer you are to being white, the closer you are to being right. Although we have fought for liberty and freedom, we are still slaves of our desire to keep uniformity and tyrannize diversity. Our present day society has confirmed that it is unacceptable to be racist, unless it is implicit, then it’s okay. Although people are still arguing that racism does not exist, people fail to realize how others are gaining unfair privileges because of their appearance. In a community of white people, the minorities are always pushed to the side. In a group picture, the “prettiest” person is always in the middle, and the farther you are from beautiful the farther you are from the center. In a school play, the black boy can be the most talented, but the white guy “better suits” the role. An Indian girl can be the most responsible in the class, but the teacher asks the pretty white girl lock up the equipment room. The Mexican girl can be the best singer in the the choir, but the blonde gets the better part. But racism doesn’t exist right?

America has alienated the nation to believe that diversity is a burden, and it has forever stained the minds of minorities. Minorities are forced to learn that they will always be at a disadvantage due to the slanted American values. There are many extents that they take to assimilate, and feel more confident with themselves. People get skin bleached, use skin lightening cream, makeup, etc. Minorities are oppressed although when white people practice other cultures, it’s acceptable. Henna is weird on Middle Easterners, but it’s fun and cute when white people do it. Black people are made fun of for having bigger lips, having darker skin, and wearing weaves. Why do white people think it’s “sexy” to make their lips fuller, and get tan on on the beach? TV stars wear extensions all the time, look at yourself before judging another race. Hispanic girls are called names that attack their sexual features such as a butt or breast. Why are Hispanics being called distasteful names when everyone wants a bigger butt and a big set of breast. How many more stereotypes does it takes for America to realize how divided we are?

Put an end to implicit racism. We are America, the country of diversity. We need to learn how to accept each other for who we are instead of putting one another down. Do not feed into white supremacy. Each and every single individual is beautiful no matter what they look like or where they come from. We are beautiful in every single form, but all in one place. America is unique, and that is beauty within itself.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
