I can easily say that when I found out they were making a modern version of Beauty and The Beast I was stoked. Choosing my favorite princess as a little girl was never difficult after seeing the original movie. I wanted to be Belle when I grew up. Who wouldn't want to be a princess that could pull off a yellow ball gown?!
After seeing the new version of the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. Before I continue, I highly advise everyone to go see it.
I always knew growing up that the theme of this fairytale was to love beyond looks. You should look past someone's outward appearance and look deeper into who they are as a person. You may be surprised with what you find.
However, after seeing the movie I realized there were so many more themes that we should recognize.
First, not only is Belle beautiful, she is also smart. In modern society it's so easy to get caught up in your own appearance that we don't take the time to think about our intelligence.
Second, the way Belle loves her father is admirable. This movie emphasizes the importance of family. Family goes beyond boyfriends, girlfriends, friends, and materialistic things. What you do for your family reflects you as a person.
Third, I was too young to realize but the reason why Belle is able to go save her father is because the beast let her go. He loved her and therefore put her before himself. That's something that is often forgotten. Being able to be selfless and care about someone so much that you only want what's best for them is what love truly is.
Fourth, when Belle asked why the workers stayed with the beast and put up with his harsh ways even when they were all human they simply said they have to stick by him. It reminded me that we must stick by the ones we love and sometimes there's so much history you have with a person that you're able to see past the bad times.
I loved seeing this movie again and being reminded of the iconic songs of my childhood.
I loved remembering being five again and cuddling up on the couch with my mom.
I loved realizing that my favorite princess fairytale still inspires me today with these timeless themes.
