Remembering to Slow Down

Beauty In Simplicity

It is near impossible to think of a time where there was not the internet at our fingertips. Where there were not planes to get across the world or technology that is opening new doors daily. It is easy in times like this to be consistently rushing and worrying. Always moving from one thing to another and forsaking the appreciation of the simple things around us. As i am writing this i can hear the rain falling through the trees. My parents live in a log home set back from the road, a road that even at rush hour sees a small number of cars. Surrounded by woods and wildlife. The city holds its own kind of beauty and excitement.

There is something to say about the country. A time to get away, seclude yourself in the woods in nature. A break away from civilization can be good for the soul. To have to drive thirty plus minutes to get to any major department stores, there is a special kind of beauty that is found in the occasional escape. In a world where we are constantly told to better ourselves and work harder and harder, tackle more and more tasks. Sometimes it is necessary to take an escape. In the quiet we are better able to work through our thoughts without the insistent interruptions of others. The stillness of nature can provide the sanctuary needed.

Things as simple as the sky, the vibrant colors as the sky wakens and falls asleep. The rain though at times disruptive can provide new growth and can cause a comforting lull. Watching squirrels and other wild life can provide a much needed sense of peace. The country life is not for everyone. Even myself having grown up in a small town my whole life grow impatient at times with the lack of excitement that is often found. When i find myself away for long, however, i find myself craving the solitude the country and quiet has to offer.

I have never been one to crave a luxurious life. I personally prefer the simplicity of small and cozy to expensive and extravagant. Though at times extravagance can be a nice change of pace there is something special about simple beauty of timelessness, and of appreciation for everything even those that are often taken for granted.

A simple lifestyle is not for everyone, even for myself, however, everyone finds themselves in need of an escape. For quiet, for peace and relaxation. As we all find ourselves choosing different paths, taking new adventures and working hard to our goals. Let us all also take moments to appreciate what we have, to appreciate the simplicity of the natural world as we take advantage of the technological advancements we have. Remember that simplicity has one of the purest beauties that is often taken for granted, so take time to appreciate it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
