It's no question that body shaming has become an epidemic in today's society. But, it certainly is questionable to society what body type should be the spokesperson for beauty.
Body shaming is a double standard. Some place curves in the limelight and promote thicker women as beautiful while others believe being thin is the key to beauty. But the truth is, thick or thin, each and everyone's body is extraordinarily, uniquely beautiful. Glorifying one body type in a way that shames another is not by any means promoting self-love.
The truth is, most of us cannot control what body we were given. Some of us have slow metabolisms, while others' are lightning fast. Some of us inherited thicker frames, while others were born petite. I have had a Kim K. booty since I can remember, while countless of my friends are built more like Kendall. While those traits aren't in our control whatsoever, we victimize ourselves and constantly wish we had control over them. But ultimately, we have no control at all over our bodies or how people view their beauty.
While beauty is not defined by curves or the lack of them, health does play a role. Health is often disregarded when discussing body shaming, although it may be the most important factor. After all, healthy is happy and happy is healthy. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating shouldn't be taken lightly. Risking your health in any way is not "tragically beautiful." No eating disorder should ever be glorified because it is surfaced to attain a "beautiful body."
Your body does not define your beauty. You are beautiful for your thoughts. You are beautiful because of the sparkle in your eyes and smile on your face. Your laugh is certainly beautiful. Your flaws are the most beautiful — the most perfect thing about you is that you're so very imperfect.
So before degrading someone else for their body, or before harming your own mentality by placing your body on an unattainable pedestal, tell yourself the following:
Beauty does not have a weight limit.
Healthy is happy and happy is healthy.
You are worth more than your appearance.
There is no wrong way to have a body.
