"Through my photography I want to capture that feeling of warmth and serenity which comes from the eyes of a woman..." - Noroc
Norwegian photographer Mihaela Noroc has been traveling the world for the past three years, creating the “Atlas of Beauty.” Each photograph showcases a random female civilian, posing for a self-portrait. So far, some of the results have been absolutely stunning.
In her most recent portrait, Noroc captures the photo of this Romanian native, Iulia. Noroc's caption contains Iulia's passion of surfing and riding the waves of Hawaii.
Earlier this year, Noroc travelled down to Ethiopia and found this woman of the Arbore Tribe in her native graces. The caption for this specific picture unveils some facts about their culture and its current status with technology.
A quick sneak peak of the Atlas of Beauty on CNN from 11 months ago. The Atlas has been getting generous buzz on social media since its inception, becoming the third most viral Tumblr blog in 2015.
I remember this picture being one of the first photos I had ever seen from this collection and thinking, "Wow." The compilation of the many children behind the woman in the center create a sense of community, a peek into the changing generations in this community. Its original caption consisted of its location: "Medellin, Colombia."
The Atlas of Beauty not only gives us a taste of the sights we may have the privilege of seeing if we ever visit these countries, but it also gives us three lessons that we should take to heart:
1. Beauty is not contained in any particular size, shape, color or form.
Beauty is found anywhere and everywhere. These women come from different cultures and backgrounds, and this atlas provides the ability for these women to come together as one unit, as one masterpiece.
2. We serve a purpose in this world.
Our cultures and backgrounds have sustained humanity’s existence in this world, providing a sort of homeostasis to our way of life on Earth. We live and breathe our lives individually, giving us our purpose.
3. It’s OK to drop everything and go outside to take a breath of fresh air.
That’s how Noroc was able to do this project in the first place!
This feat is one that may have not been the easiest for Noroc, but it is because of her hard work that we are exposed to this balance from the negativity we see in the media that is the many portraits of women around the world.
"I think beauty is diversity and it can teach us to be more tolerant" - Noroc
