Living in the south is where my heart will always be, as I was born and raised here. Being a child of northern and southern parents, I have experienced both types of Thanksgivings. Especially seeing as though my family pulls the double Thanksgiving meals every year, in the morning for lunch we go to my dad’s mothers house and then we drive four hours north to North Carolina to be with my mother’s siblings. My favorite of both of the two, being with my dad’s family and all the cousins there. Nothing, in my opinion, beats the southern traditional foods.
First, you have the sides that are irresistible. From everything like creamed corn, southern style green beans, sweet potato bake, tomato casserole, macaroni and cheese, biscuits, cornbread dressing, etc. All of these are impeccable, as there isn’t much that can beat homemade creamed corn.
Next, you have the main course section of the meal. This includes the typical turkey, in my family its cooked in a crock pot so that a mix of flavors can steep into it so that it is perfectly flavored and juicy upon mealtime. We also typically have a ham of some sort as well which is usually mouth-watering as well. Also thrown in with the main course, we always have a side of fatback as well, as it is a staple at family gatherings in my family.
For dessert, we have an overflow of the best pastries that make your sweet tooth super ecstatic. We have the typical pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and sweet potato pie. Some of the southern desserts that are always there are homemade banana pudding, homemade assorted pound cake flavors, and the no-bake cookies.
