It's been a feud for decades. People still argue over whether the Beatles or the Rolling Stones are better. While it may seem like a silly, unneeded argument, many people are very passionate about their musical choice. Known as the British Invasion, the '60s were a time of great cultural change throughout much of the Western World. Music had and continues to have a huge influence on peoples lives, which explains why people hold these bands so close to their hearts. For many, these bands hold great importance. I'm not here to tell you which band is better, but I am here to give you a basic break down between the two.
1. Syle
Known for their mop-top, clean cut appearances in the early '60s, the Beatles are iconic. They wore matching suits, nice boots, and had the mop-top hairstyles that had yet come into fashion when they first arrived on the scene. After their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show on Feb. 9, 1964, America fell in love with them. They were known around America and Europe as one of the biggest bands of the '60s. Slowly throughout the '60s they began to participate in various social movements, and eventually adopted the "hippie" aesthetic in the late '60s.Throughout the '60s, however, their styles were iconic. Almost everyone loved the Beatles.
The Rolling Stones arrived on the scene around the same time the Beatles did. At first, the Stones tried out the clean cut look but soon found that it was not for them. They quickly adopted a much rougher, quirkier image than the Beatles. America fell for the Stones, as well. The Stones quickly became iconic for many of their fashion choices like the Beatles.
2. Music
Both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones did many covers when they were first beginning to become popular. Both bands covered a wide array of artists. The Beatles and the Stones both evolved over time, however, with their sounds. It's almost impossible to say which is better. Even if you prefer one over the other, you have to admit that both of these bands are iconic. There are some, however, who argue that the Beatles are better because they were pioneers in much of the musical advances of the '60s and that the Stones simply used what the Beatles pioneered. Others, however, argue that the Stones are better because they've stayed together for so long have pioneered many areas of music before and after the breakup of the Beatles. Whichever argument you agree with, you still have to admit that both bands are fantastic.
3. Legacy
Both the Beatles and the Stones have left lasting legacies. Both are iconic of the '60s and are iconic for their music in general. While the Stones have produced more music than the Beatles throughout the years, the few years the Beatles were in the spotlight still remain legendary. Both bands changed the way many people look at music, and created dedicated fans around the world. While many picture the relationship between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as being strictly about rivalry, it's important to realize that there were friendships between the members even in the face of the rivalry.
Whether you're a Beatles fan or a Rolling Stones fan you know that both of these bands rightly deserve the title of being two of the best bands in history.
