I've noticed over the years how many people are affected by seasonal depression. I recognize the difference "the most wonderful time of the year" has on myself, as well, and this year my sister is encouraging me to do something about it. So, in honor of her enthusiastic example, here are a few ways to beat the blues this Winter and proactively change your own attitude.
1. Fake it til you make it. Tell yourself and others about how much you love the snow and the cold. Who knows? Your brain might actually start believing it!
2. Pick up a winter hobby. There are so many things to do in the snow: skiing, snowboarding, sledding, etc... You can't avoid the snow if you're going to learn to love it.
3. Get into the holiday spirit and go look at Christmas lights! As heirs to a Christmas light King, my siblings and I know a good Christmas light job when we see one (shout out to Pops for letting us help him at work during the Christmas light season).
4. "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!" Thanksgiving has come and gone, so now you won't have anyone telling you not to blast your holiday music!
5. Snuggle up in your cozy blanket and stream your favorite holiday movies!
6. Drink hot chocolate like it's water... But also drink water. Hydration keeps you healthy.
7. Go tanning! I know some of you will be worried about the effects of tanning beds, but it really does improve your mood!
8. Go to a hockey game! You don't have to take up a new hobby, but you still get to bundle up and enjoy the winter!
Don't get stuck in a rut this winter. If you're tired of hating the winter, decide to change your attitude and maybe give a few of these activities a try. Make this winter a happy one and spread the cheer!
