We all love summer, but the heat associated with this fun-filled season is unbearable at times. It's essential that we are mindful of how harmful the rays of sunlight we know and love are. Not only is the heat uncomfortable, but it can also be life-threatening. Here are 11 easy ways to beat the summer heat:

1. Drink water.

Stay hydrated- don't just wait until you're thirsty. Try to avoid alcoholic beverages because they can cause dehydration.

2. Use air conditioning.

It's the best kind of breeze when you're indoors. If you don't have a unit at home or the power is out, make sure you go to an air-conditioned building. It's the best kind of breeze when you're indoors. 3. Regulate your electricity use.

Avoid using electronics or appliances that can make you feel hotter inside- like the oven, dryer, or some lights.

4. Don’t just rely on fans to keep you cool.

Fans alone usually cannot protect against heat-related illnesses.

5. Wear loose clothes.

Wearing clothing made out of cotton is great because it's thin and you can feel the breeze. Try to wear lightweight and light-colored clothes when going out.

6. Limit your physical activity.

Don't overexert yourself outside. Doing so can cause headaches, sweating, exhaustion, muscle cramps, dizziness and fainting, and even a heat stroke. Heat strokes can be life-threatening and can come quickly.

7. Stay in the shade.

The shade will help you feel cool when the sun is beaming on you all day long.

8. Take a bath or shower.

Bathing will help you feel cooler and refreshed.

9. Go swimming.

Cooling off in a pool will allow you to stay outside longer- just don't forget to bring sunscreen.

10. Eat light foods.

Foods in high water content include fruits, salads, and soups.

11. Eat ice cream or popsicles.

Never miss an opportunity to indulge in a sweet treat. Hurry, before it melts.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
