5 Things To Do To Beat A Lonely Summer

These simple things can really be so effective

The spring semester is coming to a close, and that means SUMMER IS COMING! Even though Texas heat sucks, it means super fun times that you can be away from school and overall work, right?

While it's awesome that I get to go home to my family who lives five and a half hours south of Austin, I'll still be taking two summer classes per summer semester — so four summer classes the entire summer, not including one lab each summer :( — as well as volunteering, working as a pharm tech (passing that test first, lol), and possible shadowing opportunities.

Adulting is hard and stressful, y'all :(. So, I think these five tips can help you be able to pass some of that summertime blues that you'll be spending alone a lot of the time. Beware: these are very minimalistic things because I'm a simple girl, there is nothing to do back in my hometown, and I am a broke college student, haha.

1. Take advantage of the food and HIT UP ALL THE RESTAURANTS EVERY DAY WHILE YOU'RE THERE

If you're like me, where you'll be going back to a predominantly Hispanic city, you'll be ready to eat all the Mexican food you can. For me, it's great because while Austin does have some Mexican restaurants, they're not near campus, and Tex-Mex could never replace genuine Mexican food to me. But honestly, in a lot of smaller cities, the most fun thing to do is eat, so...

2. Learn a new language

I'm so tired of only really being fluent in one language, so if you're like me, why not try to pick up a new language this summer — even if it's just a start! 30 minutes out of your day would be a good start, I think!

3. Go window shopping and try on EVERYTHING

Ok, so maybe not all at once, but you know, maybe one by one, haha. Even though I know I most likely won't be buying any of it, it's cool to try on new things as it gives some joy, but maybe that's just me?

4. Read, watch videos, study, do whatever at the pool

Or, yeah, you can just not do that and relax! You've worked hard for such a long time and deserve some "me" time! I need to find my city's pool because I'm tryna tan in other sections of my body other than my feet tan from my Birkenstocks, lol.

5. Take up a new hobby

Can we just take a moment to appreciate THE wholesome Bob Ross? Honestly, painting is such a joy, but this time is such a great time to pick up a new hobby: watching a couple of Netflix shows here and there, journaling, singing so loud your neighbors can hear you...yeah, this is YOUR TIME that you can choose to do so many things during!

While I'm sure there are so many other things we can be doing alongside our work, I know for me, time management is still something I need to work on, haha. All I'd like to say is, I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful summer that is much needed to replenish our spirits! And maybe, just maybe, I will be seeing you around campus. I love new friends!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
