How to Beat the Heat in Boston This Week

In case you haven't stepped outside in Boston this past week and have been enjoying the chilling AC of your apartment, it's insanely hot out. Not only is it hot, it's moist AF. Yes, moist. So humid in fact, that I've learned to walk as quickly as possible while simultaneously moving as little as possible to get out of the humidity quickly without leaving a trail of melted makeup behind me. Although Boston is known for its bipolar seasons, the people of Boston tend to still freak out and act incredibly surprised when the weather isn't temperate and comfortable. So, here are some ways to try and beat the heat in the city this coming week, because the hellish conditions are here to stay (and so is my frizzy hair that makes me look like Mufasa).

1. Try SUP YO!

Sup with the heat yo?! Seriously... this heat is making me tell dad jokes. Moving on... SUP YO is a stand up paddle board yoga class that will both kick your ass and let you be on the water. Working out in the heat is near impossible if you ask me, but SUP YO allows you to ~casually~ fall off the board into the Boston Harbor if you get too hot or can't hold downward dog while trying to balance. It's a crazy hard workout that is surprisingly enjoyable and flies by due to the distractions of nature and the focus it requires to try and stay above sea level (see their schedule here http://sup-yo.com/schedule/).

2. Grab a cold treat.

Boston is full of ice cream shops, and Beacon Hill is full of trendy juice shops, too. But for me, the best of the best include PRESSED Juice Bar on Charles Street and obviously Ben and Jerry's right there on the same street. Having the two options a block away from each other is not only an excuse to dip into the AC for a bit, but an excuse to reward yourself for the healthy freshly pressed juice or acai bowl and grab a waffle cone full of "The Tonight Dough" (my fave). And probably the best option yet: Boston Police has an ice cream truck and they give out free Hoodsie Cups, so that's awesome for us broke and sweating college kids and post grads. I have on good authority that it's "wicked cool" (according to BPD Sergeant Mitchell AKA my dad), so keep your eyes and ears out for that.

3. Cold Brews and Cool People.

Head over to either the Harpoon Brewery or the Down East Cider Brewery to try tons of different alcoholic beverages and play games with friends! Both the alcohol and the games will distract you from the sweat stains everyone is accumulating as you get too competitive in darts or giant Jenga.

4. To the Roof!

No, not so you can jump off and finally relieve yourself of the heat, but to a rooftop pool. The Colonnade Hotel on Huntington is a perfect place to cool off and ball out in a cabana with bottle service and hot cabana girls or boys waiting on you hand and foot. Now, the balling out part might be hard as a 20-somethings, but the pool and a drink or two will definitely due (and totally worth the trip for an Insta - FLOATS NOT PROVIDED).

5. FROST Ice Loft

Now, I can't speak from experience, but this place is legitimately the coolest bar in Boston solely based on the fact that its made of ice and everything in it is ice (except the booze and people... I hope). Taking extremes to a whole new level here...but that's what this heat has done to us I guess!

There are also really tourist-y things you could do, like: Ride the GODZILLA at Long Wharf, head to the Lawn on D in the Seaport for some yard games, swing and music, go a Whale Watch at the Aquarium, or take a dip in Frog Pond (just kidding don't do that...it's dirty and you might get arrested)!

And if you choose to instead sit in the comfort of your AC, here's a playlist you can veg out to while the poor kid from PostMates delivering your Pinkberry slips off his bike from of his own sweat.

Stay Kool, Kids!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
