To My Sandy Best Friend

An open letter to the beach.

To My Sandy Best Friend,

A couple months ago, at Thanksgiving dinner, I sat at the table surrounded by my family. We all stated what we were thankful for. I said that I was thankful for my friends and family. But I forgot to mention you.

You have never left my side for all 19 years of my life so far and I am so thankful for that.

I go see you about once a month (yes, every month). And no matter what type of mood I am in, just seeing the sand and water instantly takes me out of the mood. I can only be happy and relaxed while I'm with you. Whatever has been bothering me prior can wait when I'm with you. So thank you for giving me the space where I can just relax and listen to the sound of waves while laying on the smooth sand.

You help me bond with my family and friends, so thank you. Without going to you, summers would have been spent sitting in my house doing nothing. Now, whenever I cannot think of anything to do or if I am bored, I just drive an hour and am instantly entertained. The same can be said by my friends and family. I always go with at least one other person to enjoy the day. Because you provide such a safe space, my family and friends really connect with me and we always have interesting conversations. There is never a dull moment while at the beach.

I also need to thank you for helping me become the bookworm that I am today. I have read so many books while with you. Although a lot of the books were required readings for English, I still loved those books because I was reading while with you. You always provide a comfortable space so that I can get a lot of reading done. Without this comfort, I would not be able to read or read as fast as I do when I'm with you. Because of you, I read so many books.

Overall, I could sum up this part of the letter by thanking you for providing the space I need when I needed it.

Because you provide this space, you have more or less become my muse. I have written so many poetry and prose, taken hundreds of photographs, and created many pieces of art, all of which was because of you. You have made me more inspired in my everyday life. I would not be the person I am today if not for you. I truly am thankful for you every day.

Love,

An Admirer

Author's Note: At the time I am writing this, I have just come home from a day at the beach and the surrounding boardwalk. I love the beach so much that I decided to write it a letter.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
