"Be The First"

A poem about being an upstander instead of a bystander

"Be The First"
The Keep Calm-o-matic

ATTENTION EVERYONE: I have a very important poem that I would like each and every one of you to read and tell your friends to read. It may be a long poem, but it will only take away a few seconds from your day, then you can go back to your busy lives, but I really would like you to think about the message and meaning of the poem and be inspired. Take something away from this poem; don't just be one of those people who can't take time out of their busy lives to make a difference in the world:

You must find the courage, the courage within you

it’s been there all along, deep within you

Ready to blossom, ready to bloom

Prepared to prosper, prepared to grow

Before you walk away, there is something you should know

when you see a bully in the hallway, or a mugger on the street,

Whether the victim is one you know, or one that you just meet

Rather than look away, or turn the other cheek,

stay and approach the perpetrator, it’s your silence they seek

Don’t just get up, leave, run and hide

You need to stand up, ask for help from the side

Tell a teacher, or call the police

it could make a difference to the victim, to live or to cease

You can do it, be bold, be strong

Stand up to perpetrators because they are wrong

Prevent criminals from killing,

You can be brave, but are you willing?

Step up to the challenge, put yourself to the test

Here is the mission, are you ready for the quest?

Put yourself in their shoes,

Would you ever want this to happen to you?

Question yourself, Is this what is right?

Don’t just stand by, trying to decide

Step up and be the hero

the difference-maker is you

Don’t just stand there,

while you are completely aware

of the situation unfolding in front of you,

There is something you can do

You can take an act,

When another is being attacked

Make a difference, I know you can

Take a stand,

Care about what is going on, in another’s life

when they’re in situations, battling death, harm, and strife

Step out of your comfort zone,

When a victim is alone

Don’t be a bystander, in a big crowd

Be fierce, be loud

You have a voice,

It is your choice

to stand up or run

For others to intervene, it only takes one

Once you’re the first, you won’t be the last

Think about the lessons of your past

If you don’t stand up first, no one ever will

Now is the time, the time is right

You have set your sight

Don’t let the moment pass, to only feel regret

defend others and yourself, and you will be set

it can be actions, or even just words

As long as you do something, as long as you’re heard

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
