Happy Thanksgiving

Be thankful; be giving

Happy Thanksgiving

There are two parts involved in the celebration of Thanksgiving and these parts are evident in the name of the holiday; Thanksgiving is a compound noun composed of the words "thanks" and "giving". Moreover, Thanksgiving reminds us to be both thankful and giving. Just as there is an innate two part nature to this holiday, my article is also two parts.

PART 1: BE THANKFUL

Thanksgiving is much more than sweet potatoes and turkey; it is a day that reminds us to be thankful. It is so important to reflect on the things you are thankful for. Gratitude is a transformative practice that makes life more meaningful. It can be easy to take daily luxuries for granted, but a life full of gratitude is a better life. In honor of the "thanks" part of Thanksgiving, here are 10 things I am thankful for:

1. My parents' unconditional love.

2. My dog.

3. My friends.

4. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin songs.

5. The Gilmore Girls' Revival.

6. Tea.

7. My ability to live in the land of the free because of the brave.

8. Laughter.

9. Sunrises and sunsets.

10. Chocolate.

Make a list of 10 things you are thankful for.

PART 2: BE GIVING

Thanksgiving also reminds us to give. It is so easy to give to others and so necessary. Chances are that many of the comforts in your life were given to you; perhaps from the sacrifices of your parents or the generosity of your grandparents. Even life's little gifts like stranger's that hold the door open are gifts. All the gifts you receive should inspire you to pay it forward. Here are 10 easy ways to give back:

1. Donate food to your local food pantry.

2. Give blood. (http://www.redcross.org/)

3. Send care packages or letters to US soldiers. (https://www.operationgratitude.com/)

4. Run or walk for a cause. Even your weekend jog can be used to give back using the Charity Miles app.

5. Volunteer at a local Senior Center.

6. Online shop via GoodSearch (https://www.goodsearch.com/). You choose the cause that GoodSearch donates a percentage of your purchases to.

7. Buy your school supplies through Yoobi (http://yoobi.com/). For every Yoobi item you buy an item is donated to a U.S. classroom in need of school supplies.

8. Donate your clothing to Goodwill (http://www.goodwill.org/).

9. Volunteer at your local soup kitchen.

10. Do something kind for someone else. It can be as simple as holding the door open or giving a compliment.

Everyday find some small way to pay it forward.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
