"Are you sure you don't want to pick something a little more realistic?"
The aforementioned quote has been something that older adults have been saying to little kids since the beginning of time.
It needs to stop right this moment.
Unrealistic people make the world turn on its axis. Almost everyone who's been an all-time great at anything has had someone doubt them at some point.
Dr. Seuss was rejected 27 times. No one wanted to give Kanye West a record deal to be a rapper. Mr. Krabs and Squidward hated on Spongebob's come-up.
As we all know, all three of those people turned out to be pretty good at their craft.
If Sally from Nowhere, Tennessee grows up believing that she'll eventually be the President of the United States, who are we as a society to kill her dreams and confidence?
If anything, we should be encouraging her confidence. Why can't she be president? Sure, we've never had a female president before. What doctrine says that Sally can't be first?
It's just like media mogul and esteemed Big Baller LaVar Ball says: "Somebody gotta be better than (Michael) Jordan." From a young age, Ball fed his children, Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo, with confidence. Those three grew up believing that they could do anything. Is being a better basketball player than His Airness a likely goal? Negatory. However, that statement says a lot. Somebody has to dethrone him one day. Why not one of them?
Fast forward to the current day. Lonzo is a once-in-a-generation talent who plays for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. LiAngelo will be playing basketball at UCLA next year. LaMelo committed to play basketball at UCLA at the age of 15.
Does LaVar Ball say ridiculous stuff? All the time. Does he cross the line? Frequently.
Has his unwavering empowerment of his kids been effective? Undoubtedly.
The world needs to have an attitude more like Lavar Ball's. After all, somebody gotta be better than Jordan.
