Sometimes, I think as humans we are a little too hard on ourselves. We beat ourselves up for doing things that we think are dumb, but they are just human things. We all goof up every now and then and that's okay.
We try to live up to these high expectations that we have set in our minds, but I think we forget that everyone does stupid things sometimes.
You know that story of when Jesus feeds the five thousand? It's a pretty popular story in the Bible. However, if you look a little closer at the story, you see something else going on.
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But he answered, "You give them something to eat."
They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see."
When they found out, they said, "Five—and two fish."
Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of men who had eaten was five thousand. - Mark 6:30-44
Did you see it? Did you see how the disciples got worried and frustrated and told Jesus to send the people away? The disciples did not even think to ask Jesus, the guy who just raised someone from the dead, healed a blind person, and did many other miracles, for help. They just thought "well this is impossible so just send them away".
How many times do we end up doing that? We think "this is frustrating so let me just have a pity party" or "I have spent four hours on this project and I'm still not done, so let me just turn in what I have". Sometimes, in the moments of frustration, worry, and doubt, we forget to ask Jesus for help.
We also end up thinking that He is nowhere near us, but He is so much closer than you think He is. Remember that God is near.
"Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything." - Philippians 4:5-6
It says that the Lord is near, not all the way in Antartica. This is repeated throughout the bible multiple times.
"Do not be afraid, for I am with you." - Genesis 26:24
"Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." - Joshua 1:9
Because Jesus became flesh and defeated the grave, He is will us in the form of the Holy Spirit. He teaches us, guides us, and comforts us. We get in the habit of saying " I'm alone, I can't do this, this is too much to handle" but you are not alone.
So next time when you feel like there is too much on your plate or that you cannot do something, remember that God is near and wants to help. Remember that you are a human too, just like everyone else.
