Random Acts Of Kindness Day

Be kind today and every other day too.

Random Acts Of Kindness Day

February 17 was Random Acts of Kindness Day. I remember this from middle school-- my teachers would hand out a sheet of paper with random acts of kindness that you were to try to complete by the end of the day. For kids, I think this is a great and very important concept to introduce. While kindness can't be taught, an environment certainly can welcome and nurture it. School is a place of learning and growing, and it should always be a place of kindness: a place where kindness is talked about and encouraged. A place where children can grow, in and with, kindness.

We are not in middle school anymore, but we are (hopefully) still growing in and with kindness, even if it's not as talked about or encouraged like when we were younger.

So, no matter where you are-- whether you've been feeling pretty good, or whether you have been feeling pretty low, remember that things always come back around. Just remember to be kind, and that is something I can guarantee that you will never regret.

So, go ahead! Initiate an act of kindness.

We hand children in 2nd grade a sheet of paper with ways to help their classmates on it.

- Write a positive note to a classmate.

- Let someone go before you in line.

- Sit by someone new at lunch.

But, instead of me proposing for you to "sharpen your classmates pencils," like my 2nd grade sheet told me to do, I'm going to try to inspire you rather than direct you.

There aren't sheets like this for adults. And while we might wish that there were, I am glad that there aren't. As (emerging) adults, part of our life's work is to think and initiate. So, go. And be kind. And know that it's always worth it.

Here are some great quotes about kindness. I hope they inspire you.

"You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." -Aesop

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." -Scott Adams

"My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness." -Dalai Lama

"Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, in knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you." -Princess Diana

"It really shocks me when I encounter people who think kindness doesn't matter. Because I think it's pretty much the only thing that matters." -Josh Radnor

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
