Be A Festival Go-Er

There's no reason not to

Electric Zoo, Fire Fly, Panorama, and Electric Daisy Carnival are all events I've attended. Governors Ball was almost added to the list but unfortunately I was a Sunday ticket holder. Music has always been important. I was a flautist, cellist and in chorus but all careers short lived due to my lack of talent. I settled with the next best option and became a fan. I've attended countless concerts and legs of tours but nothing is better than a festival.

Festivals incorporate music with fashion, food and good company. Tour legs and standard concerts range from $30-$75 in my personal experience, for an opening act and main act. However, Festivals make it possible to spend on average $150 to see countless big name artists. Running from stage to stage, watching the set times and stage names carefully and screaming when you hear your artist say "HELLOO *insert festival name*" is all part of the excitement. I love the rush of grabbing my friends hands at the end of one set and dodging other music lovers on the run to another stage to see the another big name. Festivals aren't always packed out with well known artists; a lot of the performers that play during the day are there to try and gain a larger fan base from those just walking around. New artists and up and coming performers can use a festivals platform to help get their names known.

Music isn't the only amazing thing about festivals. It's the fashion as well. Depending on the festival, the style ranges. EDC and EZoo are of course known for the rave bras and sparkle, even if that trend is fading into the shadows. However, not all festivals are as flashy. Panorama and Coachella follow the same boho shabby chic style. Each gathering has it's own voice in clothing and buying that new outfit or rummaging the closet is a highlight for me. Recently, a girl I attended Panorama with got interviewed and photographed for her street style. Strangers won't hesitate to throw compliments and you shouldn't either. It feels as if everyone is friends when the bass is pumping.

Festivals go all day and unlike a standard concert, you will get hungry. Food trucks and carts litter the sides of paths and stages. Governors Ball even released a Food Lineup for its NYC foodies out there. Vegan, Vegetarian, Meat-lovers and just your average eater can all be accomidated with the selections I've seen.

Going to these events has so many positives to it. They offer cheap high quality entertainment and even better company. If I could offer my two cents about what to spend your money on, it would be on the experience of the countless festivals in your area rather than Chipotle three times a week.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
